Frequently Asked Questions
Please reach us at LRJC@QEJLLC.COM if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Is LRJC "Just" Ballroom Dancing?
At Little Rock Junior Cotillion, Inc., our core objective is to cultivate confidence and social competence in young individuals through comprehensive instruction in social etiquette, ballroom dancing, and leadership development.
Our mission is to empower youth by fostering a strong sense of self-assurance and community engagement. We firmly believe that proficiency in social skills and deportment provides the necessary foundation for navigating diverse environments with poise and confidence, which naturally reflects in an individual's overall demeanor and interaction.
   •    Note: Little Rock Junior Cotillion, Inc. is a preparatory program focused on social and leadership skills, and is not affiliated with or designed as a "debutante" program.
Why the Gloves?
At LRJC, girls wear gloves not as a social requirement or fashion statement, but to help students feel more comfortable shaking hands and dancing with their peers. In our experience, gloves help reduce tension and make dancing a more relaxed and enjoyable experience—especially for younger students. They also provide the added benefit of minimizing the spread of germs.
Gloves suitable for events like the LRJC can be found at The Toggery, Bridal Stores, Amazon, Party City, Gloves on Line, and other locations. Whether you're preparing for a cotillion or another special occasion, these stores offer a variety of options.
How Old Does My Student Need to Begin?
Adolescent psychological studies show that children begin learning social skills at birth and continue developing them throughout their lives. Cotillion educators believe that the earlier these skills are introduced, the more confident and well-prepared children become. Based on this understanding, our program begins in the fifth grade—a time when students naturally start to replace early awkwardness with respect, consideration, and self-assurance. Cotillion offers a safe, structured, and encouraging environment where children build positive habits and learn how to interact respectfully and thoughtfully with others.
When Are Applications Due?
Applications for the fifth-grade class open on February 1 of the student’s fourth-grade year. Applications for new sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students are accepted year-round. While there is no formal deadline, applying early significantly improves your chances of participating in Little Rock Junior Cotillion events.
The Legacy priority acceptance deadline is March 1. Legacy applications submitted after this date will be processed in the order they are received, with priority given to rising fifth-grade students interested in Little Rock Junior Cotillion. All other applications will be processed according to the waiting list.
Who is a Legacy?
Legacy students are fifth graders whose parent or older sibling completed four years of Little Rock Junior Cotillion, or who have an older sibling currently enrolled in the program. This older sibling must remain enrolled in the program for this application to maintain Legacy Status.
How Are Students Selected?
Because our goal is to ensure every child has a partner in Little Rock Junior Cotillion, there is sometimes a waiting list for applicants. Acceptance is on a first-applied, first-accepted basis after Legacy students have been placed. Legacy students are those whose parent or older sibling completed four years of Little Rock Junior Cotillion, or who have an older sibling currently enrolled in the program.
If a child is placed on the waiting list, families will be notified if a spot becomes available. If no notification is received by the first dance in September, the application will automatically roll over to the following year—no reapplication is necessary. Invitation and waitlist notifications for Little Rock Junior Cotillion are emailed in June.
When to Expect to Know the Status of My Application?
To ensure all families receive their invitations, digital invitations for Little Rock Junior Cotillion will be emailed in May and posted on the website, while hard copy invitations will be mailed via USPS in June. Once a student is accepted into the program, they are automatically enrolled for the following year, so reapplication for LRJC is not required.
Do the Students Really Retain the Skills Taught in the Program?
Yes, students of all ages retain much of what they learn in our program. As with any life skill, reinforcement outside of LRJC events is both helpful and encouraged. Because every child is unique and absorbs concepts at different ages, our program is built on a four-year curriculum that provides valuable reinforcement and a deeper understanding each year.
How Does LRJC Help Students Grow Socially and Emotionally?
Students who participate in the LRJC Cotillion program develop confidence, poise, and strong interpersonal skills that support both emotional and social growth. Through age-appropriate instruction and guided peer interaction, students learn respect, consideration, and self-awareness in a positive, structured environment. Because LRJC is built on a four-year curriculum, students are able to revisit and strengthen these skills over time, allowing them to mature socially at their own pace while building habits that support healthy relationships and lasting self-confidence.
How Does LRJC Help My Child Develop Life Skill Beyond What School Provides?
Classrooms have limited time to teach respect, courtesy, and consideration—skills as important as any academic subject. LRJC provides a structured, supportive setting where students learn to introduce themselves confidently, understand the importance of practicing social skills, etiquette. By mastering these skills, children gain the confidence and grace they need to navigate social situations successfully.
Are Students With Learning or Physical Differences Welcome in LRJC Cotillion?
Of course! Over the years, Little Rock Junior Cotillion has welcomed students with physical or learning challenges, and these experiences have been rewarding for both our instructors and the children. We ask that parents reach out to us in advance to discuss any special needs so we can ensure the best possible experience.

What Happens if There Are More Boys Than Girls—Or More Girls Than Boys—At a Class?
At Little Rock Junior Cotillion, our staff are trained to step in as partners when student ratios do not match. This ensures students can mix partners, keeps the dance floor lively, and gives every child the opportunity to dance with more than one partner. Changing partners throughout the class is an important part of our curriculum, helping students build confidence, adaptability, and strong social skills.
Where is It Held?
The New Student Orientation, Informational Parent Meeting, and the first five dances of the Fall Season for the Little Rock Junior Cotillion are held in McAuley Center at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Holly Ball, our Season Finale , location for 2026 is TBD.
Are Chaperones Allowed?
Parents and guardians are welcome to chaperone the Holly Ball, portion of the Little Rock Junior Cotillion season. The dress code for chaperones aligns with that of the students, though flowers and gloves are not required for the adults.
Do I Need a Carpool?
Carpools are highly recommended for Little Rock Junior Cotillion, though not required. In fact, the carpool experience is half the fun! Many students go out for dinner or dessert before or after their dance, and arriving with friends helps students feel more confident during this socially exciting age.
LRJC does not assign carpools, but after registration ends (no earlier than August 1), we will provide lists based on school groups to help families connect. You are not limited to school-based carpools—many students carpool with neighbors or friends from the community.
